YouTube Music & Content ID Pairing Requirements

Why YouTube Content ID is tied to your YouTube Music delivery, and why you should keep YouTube Music selected when you enable Content ID.

YouTube links YouTube Content ID to the sound recording delivered for YouTube Music. For this reason, keep YouTube Music selected as a store whenever you enable Content ID for a release in DistroVibe.

Why the Two Are Linked

This is a common YouTube requirement across music distributors.

YouTube's rights system ties Content ID to a parent sound recording asset:

  • Asset Hierarchy: YouTube attaches Content ID reference files to the Sound Recording / Art Track asset created from your YouTube Music delivery. This is how YouTube connects claimed user-generated content (UGC) to the right track and pays out the related revenue.

  • Separation of Services: The reverse is not required. Selecting YouTube Music on its own delivers your track to the streaming service and creates an Art Track, without scanning, claiming, or monetizing other people's videos on YouTube.

If you want to monetize UGC with Content ID but would rather not have your release on YouTube Music, this link can feel restrictive, but it is how YouTube's system works.
