Can I Release a Mash-Up?

You can release a mashup only with written clearance from the rights holders of every song used; mashups are not eligible for Content ID.

DistroVibe TeamLast updated on October 26, 2026

You can release a mashup through DistroVibe only if you have valid legal clearance and written documentation from the copyright holders of every original song in the mix.

Mashups are derivative works

A mashup combines two or more existing recordings, typically by layering the vocals of one song over the instrumental of another. Combining recordings this way creates a derivative work.

Because mashups use audio from existing recordings:

  • All recordings must be cleared: You need explicit permission from the master owners (labels/artists) and publishers of each song used.
  • Cover licences are not valid for mashups: A mechanical cover licence only covers re-recording a composition with your own instruments and voice. It does not allow sampling, editing or combining original recordings.

Providing your clearances

  1. Keep your clearances ready: Have signed licence agreements or derivative work permissions from all rights holders before you submit the release.
  2. Upload them if asked: If our review team needs proof, your release status changes to Needs Docs. Upload the documents in the release's Documents tab. For questions, open a support ticket or email support@distrovibe.com.

Content ID restriction: Mashups are not eligible for YouTube Content ID or Meta Rights Manager. Turn these off in the Additional Delivery section of the release wizard.
