Can I Give Away My Music for Free?
Stores do not allow free downloads of distributed releases; here are other ways to share your music for free.
Not through store distribution. Here is how store pricing and free listening work:
How stores handle pricing
- Download stores (iTunes, Amazon, Beatport): Download stores use set price tiers for singles and albums. They do not support a permanent free ($0.00) download price.
- Streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer): You cannot offer free downloads through streaming services, but listeners on free, ad-supported tiers (such as Spotify Free or YouTube Music) can stream your music without paying.
Other ways to share your music for free
If you want fans, DJs, curators or radio programmers to download or listen to your tracks at no cost, you can use other channels:
- Direct file sharing: Send WAV or MP3 files directly to collaborators, curators or radio stations by email.
- Cloud storage links: Host promo files on cloud storage (such as Google Drive or Dropbox) and share private download links.
- Open platforms: Upload directly to open platforms like SoundCloud or YouTube for free playback.
- DistroVibe SmartLinks: Once your release is live, a SmartLink collects your streaming links on one shareable page for your audience.
